This quilt-along was year-long activity, starting January 2021, to create a sampler quilt designed by Janice Boutotte. This sampler quilt is suitable for all skill levels as the quilt-along will start with the easiest blocks and progress in difficulty as the year progresses. Each month Janice will send out instructions for a new block/section of the quilt; the instructions will also be posted on the Guild’s website. In addition, Janice will do a short online discussion/demonstration of tips and techniques for the block(s) during the Open Sew time, including some helpful tools. No special tools will be necessary, and in many cases, alternate methods of construction will be provided. Some of the techniques Janice will discuss are selecting fabric color choices; brief history of some of the blocks; pressing and tips to improve accuracy; alternate methods to make half square triangles (HST) and flying geese; working with bias pieces; how to make perfect circles; sewing curves; how to sew Y-seams or substitute another method to avoid Y-seams; and mitered corners.
Below are some computer-generated samples of the quilt. The quilt has twelve different 12” primary blocks, separated by an alternate 12” block; the blocks are set on point. Most of the samples use the Snail Trail block (also called the Monkey Wrench block) as the alternate block; one of the quilts uses a single Irish Chain block as the alternate block.
