Prior Summer Challenges

2021 –  Letters

Our fun summer challenge has to do with LETTERS…specifically the initials of your name!

The goal is to make a completed wall hanging sized quilt with the following rules:

One initial should represent the main color or theme of your quilt, another initial should represent the pattern or block and the third initial should represent the quilting motif… any initial can be any item.  Creative license is allowed with colors and quilting motifs (ie blue can be aqua, stipple can be meander…)

An example would be Annette Delores Baker … could be Drunkards Path, block in aqua and quilted with Baptist Fan.

And don’t worry if you only have 2 initials … you get a wild card!

The most important thing is to have FUN!

And bring your quilts to our September meeting for Show and Tell!

2019 –  Just Imagine

For this year’s summer challenge, we hope to inspire your imagination using recycled magazine ads. They are often filled with color, shapes, and ideas that spark creativity.

Each of you received an advertisement page torn from a magazine. If you don’t like the first page will be allowed one more random choice, or you can trade with a willing trader.

You will need to create a project of your choosing using SOMETHING from the page. It could be the color pallet, the theme of the ad, the shapes used on the ad, or only one single color from the page. Be creative, think outside the box.   Excellent Prizes will be awarded in September.

Rules:

  • A casual observer should be able to tell that your project relates to the advertisement page you received.
  • Must be created during this summer break. ( already completed projects NOT allowed)
  • Keep the Ad Page with your project, so that in September, we can use it to verify that the project complies with the rules.
  • Can be a quilt of any size, a tote or bag, a wall hanging, a stuffed animal, placemat, mug rug, table runner, etc…

2018 – Make it Modern

Our summer challenge will be to take a traditional quilt block and recreate it using modern quilting elements. (Some block examples below)

Guidelines:
  • Blocks may be any size, the link provided will give you some different sizes as a jumping off point.
  • All quilts must be finished (quilted and bound) by the September meeting.
  • Finished quilts can be any size.
Examples of modern quilting elements include, but are not limited to:
  • Use of bold colors and prints
  • High contrast and graphic areas of solid colors
  • Improvisational piecing
  • Minimalism
