Veterans’ Quilts (2011-12) – Mothertown Quilters

The Mothertown Guild’s Outreach Project exceeded their goal 85 quilts for the Veterans Inc.’s Housing Program’s Grove Street shelter. On May24th a contingent from the guild went to the Grove Street shelter to deliver the 104 quilts. Cathy Racine, from Charlton Sewing Center, and volunteers had created 85 pillow cases to go with the original goal of 85 quilts.

The Grove Street shelter is the only center for veterans, and the largest drug- and alcohol-free shelter, in Central Massachusetts. The Outreach Committee, coordinated this achievement with the effort and hard work of the whole guild as well as donations from fellow members and from outside organizations/companies/individuals/quilt shops.

Outreach would like to thank all of the members of the Mothertown Quilters for their time and for reaching deep into the recesses of their fabric stashes to donate fabric, piecing and machine quilting time and skills. Oh, and let us not forget all the BINDING!

We also thank Holice Turnbow, an international quilt judge and instructor, who has generously joined us in our mission to make the quilts for the Grove Street Veteran’s shelter in Worcester. He created a pattern for quilt tops based on fabric panels donated by Wayside Quilters in Sudbury. He made the pattern and donated the fabric to finish the tops for the 17 panels. He also donated an entire bolt of batting as well with which to quilt them and many other quilts in progress. He also took the time to spend the day with us, giving us instructions and tips on quilting the tops.
